recovery
What is recovery?
Recovery is different for everyone however one of the most frequently quoted definitions of recovery is from Anthony (1993, p.13): “Recovery is a deeply personal, unique process of changing one’s attitudes, values, feelings, goals, skills and roles. It is a way of living a satisfying, hopeful and contributing life even with limitations caused by the illness. Recovery involves the development of new meaning and purpose in one’s life as one grows beyond the catastrophic effects of mental illness.”
Each person who is experiencing a mental illness will discover the changes that are required to make their recovery a reality. It may include new and better relationships, new ways of thinking or a focus on physical health. Creative expression, meaningful activity (for example employment or volunteering), and new experiences can all contribute to a refreshed sense of life’s possibilities.
